Celebrating a Bride and Momma to Be!

This past weekend some of my girlfriends and I planned to get together to make our menu for our annual ThanksChristmas that we do on Black Friday. The guys were white water rafting, so I thought it would be perfect to have them over for dinner and some planning.

One of my friend's is getting married next May and another one is having a baby in March, so I set out to do a little decorating for them!

For the Bride to be!!!!

Unfortunately, I messed up the date on their cake topper. It should be 2017 instead of 2016!
This was Shay's Caramel Apple Cider cake! Yum!

I threw together a little bundt cake gift with items to make one of Shay's 101 bundt cakes with her awesome bundt cake book! I have loved making delicious yet super easy cakes from this book and giving it as a gift. You can find it here!

For the momma to be!!!

My friend's hadn't found out yet what the gender of their baby was, so I did a little bit of boy and girl.
I always thought I didn't want to find out the gender of my baby when that day comes, but after one shopping trip of trying to find gender neutral items, I'm totally over that!!!
It was so hard to find anything cute that was gender neutral!

Here I made Shay's Pumpkin Spice Latte bundt cake!!

I ordered this super cute personalized banner, but of all days our mail was late coming in on Saturday, so the package wasn't checked in by the time the post office closed.
So, no cute banner for the sweet baby to be!

I really enjoyed putting everything together for this evening! I can't wait to celebrate the Gray's and Baby Emler!

Yesterday it was nearly 80 degrees here! Last week the mornings were in the 30's, so I definitely enjoyed a sunny warm weekend! Who knows, next weekend it might be snowing here.
Have a great Monday!

Friday Favorites

Today I'm linking up with Erika, Narci and Andrea to share some Friday Favorites! All week I have been a day off, so although I'm glad it's Friday, I really thought today was only Thursday!

I'm not much of a warm beverage drinker. I don't like coffee or tea, but I do enjoy some hot chocolate from time to time. These are some of my favorite mugs. And that takes me to #2...

Our health nurse at school gave us a piece of dark chocolate as a little Valentine's Day gift last year. I ate that piece of dark chocolate and have been hooked. I'm not a candy person, but I now do prefer dark chocolate to milk. I found these while at the grocery store lately and have been enjoying some dark chocolate cocoa!

Have you guys seen one of these cool measurement cups? I guess they're called the Metric Wonder Cup, hence the name on the front, but we always had this while growing up and my mom always used it for peanut butter... and here I am with peanut butter in it while making a recipe the other night.

We've had this Ninja for a long time, but I never took the time to pull it out. The other night I needed to make some graham cracker crumbs, so I pulled it out to see how long and hard it would take me. I used the smaller container, and it literally took me about 15 seconds to crush my graham crackers. I definitely will be using this more often!

Earlier in the week I talked about scarves. If you missed it, check it out here. It's quickly becoming scarf season, and I recently stocked up on a few new cute ones!

Have a great Friday! I'm off to a day of grade level meetings!

How Things Change

I'm a small town girl who enjoys the simplicity of every day life. I determine if I'm comfortable living someplace by feeling safe while running around the premises any time, day or night.

When I went to college I knew I wanted to go someplace that allowed me the ability to run on campus/near campus around anytime that I wanted. I found just that in my second school..Kent State. I was that weird girl who was running at 9 pm on Halloween night while nearly everyone else was already stumbling over their own feet. I find comfort in the ability to know my surroundings by running.

I've been running since I was 11. That's nearly 15 years of getting to know my hometown by simply lacing up my Mizuno's and heading out for a daily run. I used to be able to run nearly every day; however, my body nixed that a few years ago. After shin splits, stress fractures and a marathon, my body said it couldn't endure the daily pounding... So, I give it a break every other day now.

What I've found is that so many of my memories and knowledge of people have come from running around town. I'm deeply saddened by how many of those people have moved on to the glorious pearly gates and others who have moved to another area or just aren't capable of getting outside.

In high school I walked to school, through a field and down a road, but I always knew one lady would be standing at the corner. She's the lady who always yelled "Go, go" when I went running past their house, and she would greet me with a morning hello. Her hair was always perfectly in place, and I miss her sweet demeanor and "good mornings!" She and her husband still live in the same spot, but it's rare to see them out; however, my head still turns hoping to see their faces.

Not more than a quarter mile up the road an older man and woman have lived. Often times I would see them sitting out in lawn chairs in the garage. Two winters ago, the older man was slowly shuffling his feet across the icy road to get the paper. I came upon him and thought about making a comment about his safety and that I could bring the paper to them any morning, but the more I thought about it the more I really shouldn't have been out on the road running either. We greeted each other with a wave and "morning" and I continued on my way. This summer this gentleman passed away. The house is now for sale, and it just doesn't look right as I pass and the garage door is down; it was never down.

As I continue around town, I pass my dear friend Ruthie's house. She was always sitting on the porch, and I wish I could turn my head and see her white hair sitting there. In her last few years, I would often pass her house extremely early in the morning on my way to work just to see if she was awake. Sometimes there she would be sitting at the kitchen table. Other times I remember shoveling her snow when we had snow days; she never let a day pass without coming out to greet me. And she's the only nearly 90 year-old lady who reserved People magazine at the library each week. I miss her dearly!

If I continue on through town I will pass an older lady and man who I would frequently pass walking their dog while I ran. They moved this summer and since, someone has come in and pulled out the nature land preservation area that used to be their front yard. No more waving as I passed or "good mornings" in the summer.

If I would turn I would make it to my grandma's house. One year ago today she went to a better place.

No longer is she suffering or in pain. She no longer feels like she's burdening my family and if I had to guess is baking, gardening or cooking up something yummy to eat.

A year ago I told her I would be back in the morning. It didn't matter if I had to break in; I planned to be at that nursing home before 5 am. I know she was listening when I told her I would be back because she drifted off not much more than an hour after I had left. It's fitting that she wouldn't go while my family and I were there.

Our final conversation involved life--I talked as if she could hear every word and made up responses in my head that I knew she would say. The ironic thing is I told her that I expected a lot of food. She could drop it randomly from Heaven ha! or have it show up in unexpected ways, but I could really use some of her specialties. A year later I sit here with her own homemade applesauce in a bowl. We found it while defrosting the freezer. In true fashion, it's in an old butter container, but it was crafted with love by my grandma, and no matter how old it is, I will savor every last drop!

Life is difficult. Life is hard. Life is memorable. But life teaches us so much, and even though many of these people will never know their touch on my life...my Mizuno's have taken me many places and taught me oh so much.

Stranded...Halloween Candy

Today I'm linking up with Shay and Erika to share my 3 favorite Halloween candies.

To be honest, I'm not a candy kind have gal! I could take it or leave it, so my candies will be pretty typical.

I always laugh at those parents who say they steal their children's candy to eat when they go to bed or before they even give them the bag. I definitely don't think I would be one of them!

1- Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Who doesn't love a little chocolate and a little peanut butter?

2- Peanut Butter M&M's

I like the original M&M's, but recently I've taking a liking to the Peanut Butter!

3- KitKat
I've always loved a KitKat. Actually I accredit it for Alex and I being together. This was the first thing that he ever gave me. He gave me a KitKat.

Scarves

These cold early morning temperatures are reminding me how much I love scarves!

My classroom is very chilly on a daily basis; I seem to only get afternoon sun, so in the morning I could basically wear my coat every day.

The past couple of days I've been finding a ton of scarves to add to my collection.

It doesn't help that when Alex and I got married, and I moved in this summer that I said I would bring my scarves first. I have way too many and Alex wasn't sure the rest of my clothes would fit with all of the scarves... A girl can never have too many!

Here are some Loft favorites...
Extra 60% off using FLASH....
....making them only $8

Nordstrom favorites...
Last night I ordered this fringe scarf in Olive.
It also comes in 5 other colors!
This is a classic plaid infinity scarf that comes in one other color
Such a cute new tan multi
It also comes in two other colors, but I loved this one the best!
Love this new check square one.
It isn't in my shopping cart yet, but I ought to add it soon!
I think this will be super cute for the holidays!
I ordered the Red Rumba, but it also comes in grey.

I'm pretty set to be wearing a different scarf with my outfit every day for a while!
Good thing because we do winter here for about half of the year!
Happy Shopping!

Apple Pie

My grandma taught me to make pie crust when I was young.
I never could perfect her recipe, so I changed to another family favorite pie crust recipe.
 It's so simple!

Pie Crust
2 C. Flour
1/2 C. Butter (softened)
1/3 C. Milk
1 1/2 tsp. Vinegar
Dash of Salt
Mix together all of the ingredients and let sit in the refrigerator for a while.
Remove, flour surface and roll out.

You can use the pie crust recipe for nearly any pie that you would like to make..
Roll out, place in pie plate, crimp edges and leave extra dough for pie topper.

5 Golden Delicious apples...I like Johnagold, but the store was out of them, so I used Golden Delicious

I mixed some recipes together this time and ended up with

Apple Pie
5 Golden Delicious apples-sliced
5 TBSP. Cornstarch
1 TBSP. Cinnamon
1 C. Sugar

Mix together all ingredients and put in pie plate with crust. Roll out leftover dough, put on top of pie. Cut some slits in the pie top. Spread a tsp or 2 of milk on top. Sprinkle some sugar on top. Bake @ 350 for 45 minutes or until brown.

Roll out the rest of the dough and put on top.

Cut some slits in the pie top.

Top with milk and sugar!

Delicious apple pie!
Add a scoop of ice cream to the warm pie for a great evening snack!

Mexico...

For a couple years now some of my friends and I have been dreaming of taking a friends trip together somewhere. We initially thought Jamaica but ended up in Mexico and had a great time!

This was a busy summer as about a month after getting back from the Keys and Bahamas we flew to Mexico. We had a straight flight, which was awesome!
We were in Mexico and at our resort by 10 am!

Love these friends!

Alex spent a lot of time playing sand volleyball while I watched, read and got a good tan.. Okay, one day they did talk me into playing, but I just don't have the strength for it.

Planning for the school year in July beach side is the best!

Dinner!

Nearly every morning I enjoyed yoga underneath the beach hut

Another dinner night!

The crew minus a few!

On our way back home!

Pro's
-The entertainment staff was AWESOME at our resort
-The shows each night were good
-Yoga was great!
-The amount of swimming pools was an over abundance!

Con's
-We didn't love the food..I survived on warm pretzels, chips and Queso and chocolate covered strawberries!
-The water smelled funny
-Our rooms weren't the most up to date
-The ocean was rocky and not easy to swim or walk in

Anyone have suggestions on great resorts in Mexico?
